HUD Unveils New PATH Concept Home Vision
At the 2008 International Builders’ Show, PATH revealed the design plans for a Concept Home to be built in Charleston, South Carolina. The home will serve as a model of sustainability, hurricane-resistance, efficient building practices, and floor plan flexibility.

PATH Concept Home Charleston Design Moves Forward
The latest sketch of a possible design for the PATH Concept Home CharlestonThe Concept Home team moved a step closer to creating PATH Concept Home Charleston on December 4 when architects, builders, engineers, interior designers and landscape architects took part in an integrated design review session.
America’s second PATH Concept Home features a design that does an excellent job of allowing the home to grow with the family. The home’s service core efficiently consolidates mechanical and plumbing areas, while simultaneously enlarging the open areas that serve as living spaces. Read more.
PATH Convenes Experts & Innovators to Design Concept Home Charleston
Charrette participants, led by Torti Gallas and Partners architect Mark Bombaugh, review draft design concepts. The house design will integrate with local design styles while also serving as a model for innovative building systems and sustainability.On October 24, the PATH Concept Home team brought together housing innovators of all types to lay the groundwork for Concept Home Charleston. Designers, builders, technology experts, realty professionals, landscape architects and others collaborated in the day-long charrette to create the Concept Home’s initial design concepts and sustainability goals. The event was attended by the Mayor of Hollywood, South Carolina, the Charleston-area locality where the home will be built.
The major accomplishment for the day was to create several design options for the Concept Home, which will be refined and polished over the next few months to arrive at the final plan. Read more.
Ready, Set, Design!
PATH Staff member Mike Blanford attended the recent design charrette for the Concept Home Charleston. He participated on the “design track” and gives his insight into the design considerations of the project.
An example of a low country style home design available in Poplar Grove.The development of the preliminary home designs went through three stages during the charrette. The first was a group discussion about the lot: the dimensions, orientation of the lot geographically, views and relationship of the lot to other homes and common areas.
The Concept Home Charleston lot will front a public road to the north, with an alley-fed garage in the rear. Bordering the lot to the west is a public walk, while on the east is another house. The site restrictions, set backs, etc., were also outlined. One important detail for our design efforts: across the street is a large, protected marsh area, so our views would be out the front of the home. Read more.
HUD Names Charleston Builder for PATH Concept Home in South Carolina
On December 12, HUD’s Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) announced that Greater Charleston, S.C., will be the site of the nation’s second Concept Home.
The project will take place at Poplar Grove, a 6,000-acre nature conservation community within Greater Charleston’s historic Ashley River Preservation District. Bennett Hofford Construction of Charleston has been selected to build Concept Home Charleston, which is expected to be completed by Fall 2008. Read more.
