Final Case Study Report [.pdf, 275 KB] August 2005

The New Hampshire Community Loan Fund (NHCLF) is finalizing the design of a 44-lot, HUD-Code land-lease community called Barrington Hills. Located in southern New Hampshire, it is one of the 10 areas of the country in greatest need of affordable housing. Working with PATH, as well as local environmental groups such as the Jordan Institute and the Society for the Preservation of New Hampshire Forests, the NHCLF is trying to balance high standards of environmental responsibility and construction with a very tight budget. PATH proposes to place all the ranch-style homes on floating slabs with foundation anchorage that meets the lending agency's criteria for a "permanent foundation," and to devise a form of solid and permanent skirting to replace the usual vinyl. Depending on the budget, a number of the homes are intended to be of the NextGen-style Cape Cod designs, placed on full basements.

Preliminary approval was sought in late Summer 2002 and final approval in November, with the first homes being built as soon thereafter as weather and contracting permitted. Several PATH energy upgrades and improved technologies were included in the design, plus as many NextGen-style homes as possible within the project budget.

This is the pilot project for a continuing series of high-quality, cooperatively-owned manufactured home communities planned for construction in New Hampshire.
