La Plata, Maryland
Field Evaluation: Washington Square
Project Summary
Full Interim Report November 2001
Bruce Davis Construction, Inc., developer and builder, designed the Washington Square community to meet requirements of older adults who are independent and active, and who wish to live in a comfortable, secure and low maintenance home. The homes are constructed of insulating concrete forms (ICFs), to provide energy-efficient and durable exterior walls.
This eighty-unit, owner-occupied, senior's housing development is located about 25 miles south of Washington, DC in La Plata, Maryland. The community consists of 1 and 1½ story townhouse/duplex units, ranging from 1,000-1,500 square feet.
Bruce Davis Construction used ICFs for the first 18 units, and selected ArxxForms, a product of AAB Building System, Incorporated. Chaney Enterprises is the distributor for both the ICFs and concrete.
Several PATH technologies, in addition to ICFs, were used throughout the project, including:
Construction on the model homes in a duplex arrangement began in May 1999. In addition to being a PATH Field Evaluation and Demonstration Project, one of the model homes was the Nation's Capital Concrete Showcase Home, sponsored by the Northeast Concrete Shippers Association and the Portland Cement Association. The entire project was also enrolled in the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative's EnergyStar® program.
