Field Evaluation: Asdal Builders
Project Summary
Full Final Report May 2002
The NAHB Research Center worked with Asdal Builders to incorporate PATH technologies in an energy retrofit of a single-family detached home. This project used PATH technologies and traditional energy saving methods to provide cost-effective approaches to achieve significant energy savings. The site is located in Henderson, Nevada, near Las Vegas.
There are a number of PATH technologies well suited for energy retrofits. Some of these technologies include radiant barrier, LED Lighting, super efficient refrigerator, vertical axis (top-loading) energy-saving clothes washers, and high efficiency air conditioner without CFC’s . PATH technologies were considered after an initial energy use assessment was completed to determine the best site-specific solutions.
Extensive site monitoring and software modeling was performed before and after the modifications to document energy savings. This monitoring provides a more thorough understanding of savings associated with specific modifications. Approaches for energy retrofits are being identified to satisfy the PATH goal of reducing energy consumption in existing homes, while maintaining affordability.
Retrofit was started in January 2000 with replacement of the refrigerator, clothes washer and dryer. In March 2000, windows were replaced, the radiant barrier was added in the attic, air infiltration sealing was performed, and some heavily used lights were replaced with compact fluorescent lights. The new rooftop HVAC system, and a programmable thermostat were also installed in March 2000.
In July 2000, an additional R-19 of insulation was added to the attic, along with wrapping the uninsulated duct with R-6. These changes completed the retrofit.
Monitoring of the completely retrofitted house continued from August 2000 to February 2001. Datalogging equipment was removed in March 2001.
