The Norwegian Building Research Institute (NBI) is the leading national center of technical and sociological research and development relating to buildings and the built environment. The head office, in Oslo, has five departments. In addition, there is one research department located in Trondheim at the campus of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Areas of Expertise

Materials and Construction

NBI provides expertise and research facilities for the study of climatic effects on building materials, structures and design. The institute focuses on the design of buildings that satisfy the functional requirements for weather protection, heat and noise insulation, and resistance to wind load. NBI also assists in building management, rehabilitation, dealing with building defects, and product approval and certification. NBI develops materials and solutions for high quality building technology, and has particular expertise in timber building design, concrete, fire, and acoustics. NBI’s wide range of field analysis and advice services are based on nearly 50 years of studying building defects.

Building Process

NBI’s areas of expertise in those processes involving construction and property industry professionals include framework conditions, productivity, planning and building processes, quality management, building defects, building, and construction reference data library.

Housing, the Built Environment, and Society

A multi-disciplinary team brings sociological, architectural, and economic skills to the following areas: housing, welfare and living conditions; housing economics and markets; and planning and the built environment.

Building Services, Energy, and the Indoor Environment

NBI’s wide ranging expertise covers energy, indoor environment, ventilation, sanitation technology, and the environment.

Knowledge Transfer

Publications: Sharing knowledge is important to NBI. Around 20 staff develop and publish knowledge products and research documents.

Building Research Design Sheets: Using clear text and detailed illustrations, this series provides concrete solutions and advice on a wide range of specialist building issues. It is updated twice a year and is available on paper, CD, and via the Internet.

Bathroom Guidance: This guidance for work on bathrooms and other rooms with water exposure is regularly updated. Published in collaboration with a specialist council for bathrooms, it is available on paper and CD.
